    To reduce its environmental impact, the company is digitising its meter reading and billing process. All machines with the option to send automated meter reads will be invoiced based on the data captured through its cloud service @Remote. Ricoh’s technical staff will interact with customers’ IT support department to enable this service, if it is not already enabled.

    In parallel, we will be implementing paperless E-billing via email. Customers just need to share with us an authorised personnel’s email ID to operationalise this system. An easy and convenient way to pay bills via electronic transfer through RTGS/NEFT is enabled for all customers.

    How do you take your average enterprise printing set up and then lower costs by half, save over Rs. 40 lakh a year, and ensure a 98% uptime? Ask Siemens and Ricoh

    Siemens, a Rs. 12,000 crore company, was looking at scaling down its overall costs and managing core operations more effectively. Satish Kotgire, Head-IT infrastructure, Siemens, chose to strategically outsource non-core, yet vital areas of the company’s IT and business processes.

    His team identified the opportunity to lower overhead costs in the company’s document and output management processes. “We wanted to centralise our IT spending for printers, copiers, consumables, and production sites with the goal of reducing operational and maintenance costs. This would eventually improve our cost structures related to document output,” says Kotgire.

    Siemens is also committed to a multi-faceted environmental sustainability plan consisting of staff education, a reduction of solid waste, and decreased energy consumption and greenhouse gases. Therefore, Kotgire and his team chose to implement a solution that could support Siemens’ environmental sustainability goals.

    The task of managing equipment, printing and distribution, billing, reporting and meeting the needs of over 14,000 employees was daunting, and with no central means of managing overall costs. That’s why Siemens chose to partner with Ricoh. “We looked to Ricoh to leverage its expertise, experience and global presence to support us,” says Kotgire.

    Controlling output costs
    Kotgire began by establishing a baseline – “The first step was to make a thorough assessment of our office infrastructure. That revealed a surplus of under-utilised devices,” he says. His team and Ricoh found that there was a need to manage nearly 700 devices. “This meant that we had 20 employees, on average, to each device. Approximately 26% of these devices were either out-of-date or malfunctioning, and were responsible for excessive print costs”.

    His team also discovered that there was a lack of asset management and cost control for printers, supplies, and the management of devices. Complicating the situation was the fact that Siemens had five or more vendors supplying print/copy services with varying consumables, support and billing. After a thorough study, Ricoh recognised an opportunity to optimise, rationalise and provide standard technology platforms to Siemens’ office environment.



    Improving sustainability

    Kotgire decided to implement a centralised programme to shrink the company’s total annual document output costs. A large portion of Siemens’ output fleet was replaced with Ricoh MFDs – a newer, more cost-effective, and more energy-efficient technology approach to document management.

    Siemens, with the help of Ricoh, set up an asset database to track, bill, and report documents across India. It also created an integrated printer and IT help desk that logs and tracks all user inquiries and service calls.

    Ricoh is also helping Siemens to achieve its sustainability goals by introducing Ricoh’s new Quick Start Up (QSU) technology, an energy saving methodology with PxP toner multifunction devices that result in 25% less waste than typical laser printers. Ricoh diligently recycles toner cartridges according to its enterprise sustainability guidelines.

    In addition, Ricoh ensured that double-sided (duplex) print is a default feature on all its devices. “We have now established an ongoing data-gathering process and critical performance metrics through quality tools, which will eventually form a part of Siemens’ framework for continuously improving the quality of our customer service,” says Kotgire.

    Efficient service delivery

    Siemens was impressed with Ricoh’s rapid implementation of equipment and services right from Ricoh’s MDS program. Kotgire was able to gain complete control of output costs. “We achieved a 55% decrease in costs per page, as we removed 250 output devices and simultaneously increased our employee-to device ratio by more than 35%. This has enabled us to achieve our financial and document management goals to a great extent,” says Kotgire.

    Overall, Ricoh has successfully helped Siemens to save 30% in costs, amounting to over Rs. 42 lakh a year. Siemens also experienced a significant reduction in its asset base and notable improvements in its printing processes.

    Siemens has now decided to continually expand its relationship with Ricoh by including other subsidiaries into the plan. Using Ricoh’s proven model, Siemens will continue to control functions such as helpdesk, break/fix, supplies management, asset management, and proactive device management for all Ricoh and non-Ricoh devices in the company’s offices nationally.

    Says Satish Kotgire, “Ricoh’s technology, knowledge, and process deliver value to our business units, cost savings to IT, and the ability to re-invest those savings in IT innovation.”

    Ricoh wows customers at Printpack 2017 with a range of unique applications



    13th Printpack IPAMA Expo was held from 4th-8th February 2017 at India Expo Centre, Greater Noida. Called ‘the world’s 3rd largest international exhibition on graphic arts industry’, the event brings together thousands of leading imaging professionals from every sector of the imaging industry – sign making, digital imaging, commercial printing and garment decoration seeking innovative products, methodologies and applications.

    Innovation with business results: Not what you spend, but how you spend



    Success in a highly competitive business world demands executives make their companies stand out with breakthrough products, business models and customer experience. So, how much should a company invest in innovation and where should it invest to produce real business results?
    Many business executives will be surprised to learn that the answer isn’t simply to spend more dollars on R&D. Instead, true innovation leadership requires an investment focus not just on product development but more systemically across an organisation’s business processes. That’s one of the key findings from a recent IDC study that looks beyond the big myth of innovation as a process synonymous with developing disruptive products or business models, such as Apple’s iPhone or Uber’s car sharing service.


    Conducted on behalf of Ricoh, the global study of 1,600 large enterprises sought to understand innovation and how it drives business results.  IDC grouped companies into four categories (Leaders, Performers, Followers and Laggards), based on the extent to which they exhibited innovative behaviours tied to positive business outcomes.
    Linking innovation and business results
    IDC’s study revealed a strong link between innovation and business outcomes. Innovation Leaders drive far better business results than any other category, which points to their systemic approach to investments. By comparison with Laggards, the study found that over a three-year period, Leaders achieved:
    • 41% greater sales growth
    • 40% greater improvement in productivity
    • 16% greater improvement in profit margins
    • 33% greater improvement in product quality
    • 41% more revenue from new products
    However, most companies are not producing business results from their innovation efforts, according to IDC. The two main reasons for this are how and where companies invest in innovation, and how well the organisation performs on innovative behaviours.
    So, which best practices help define a company as an Innovation Leader? IDC’s study offers an eye-opening and instructive look at several high-impact practices displayed by successful innovators.
    Innovation investment: How much leaders spend on R&DOne of the study’s most striking findings is that contrary to common wisdom, Innovation Leaders spend 5% of revenue on R&D versus the 7% that Laggards spend. This begs the question: If the Leaders are spending a lower share of revenue, then how are they driving better business results?
    The surprising answer: Innovation Leaders spend a greater share of their R&D on blue-sky projects – research outside of current products or offerings. Leaders spend 29% of their R&D on this, in contrast to 18% for Laggards. As one study respondent said: “[A driver of innovation is] how much money you spend on stuff you are not sure is going to work or not.”

IDC’s study found that Innovation Leaders are more focused on making many small bets: 81% of Leaders but only 19% of Laggards take this approach. Making lots of small bets allows the innovator to iterate rapidly, learning what works and what does not, and to quickly adjust to changing market conditions. The study found strong evidence that making many small bets also leads to better business outcomes.
    Leaders also focus on information technology as an innovation enabler and derive strong business results from its use. They understand that IT is fundamental to unleashing and optimising the flow of information to spark ideas, derive insight, and to enable collaboration. All these activities help drive innovation.
    Interestingly, Innovation Leaders also use technology most broadly – and not just the latest technologies like mobile, cloud, and social. That approach is reflected in the top five technologies Leaders use to support innovation: Enterprise social networks, Business process workflow automation, Digital signage, Information capture/tagging/indexing/search, and Mobile device support for core enterprise applications.
    Use of key technologies such as collaboration tools, enterprise search tools, and information capture and tagging produce real and striking business results. For instance, companies that effectively leverage internal collaboration tools have:
    • 16% higher revenue growth
    • 28% higher profit margin
    • 90% more growth in their fastest-growing product line
    Conclusion
    Is it possible to innovative without disrupting a market or offering new products? IDC’s study suggests the answer is yes. It found that the most successful companies innovate broadly, creating new revenue sources and new business models, not only new products. These companies believe innovation across many functional areas is important. To achieve innovation leadership, they focus their R&D on blue-sky opportunities and use technology very effectively. It’s not how much these leaders spend but what they invest in that enables their innovation to produce superior business results.
